Media reported on Trump's desire to reduce the U.S. contingent in Europe
US President Donald Trump intends to reduce the US military contingent in Europe by 20 thousand people. This was reported by the ANSA agency on January 22.
Trump bases his decision on the fact that the U.S. troops in Europe are only a "deterrence tool", so the cost of their maintenance cannot be covered solely by the funds of U.S. taxpayers, the agency reports.
In addition, the politician intends to insist on a "greater contribution" of European countries to the maintenance of the remaining contingent.
According to the publication, at this stage the proposal is under consideration and has not yet been presented to European partners.
Earlier, on January 21, the American president announced his intention to get NATO countries to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. He also complained that the USA spent $200bn more on military aid to Ukraine than other countries and said that they would have to "equalize the situation".
Trump was inaugurated on January 20, taking the oath of office and becoming the 47th president of the United States.
