Tesla CEO Ilon Musk got into a public conflict with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over the Stargate project supported by US President Donald Trump. This was reported by the Associated Press on January 23.

The new Stargate structure is already starting to build data centers and generate electricity needed for further development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

"This is great for the country. I realize that what's good for the country is not always optimal for your companies, but <...> I hope you will put [America] first," Altman wrote.

As the agency specifies, the public clash over Stargate is part of a long-running dispute between Musk and Altman that began with a rivalry on the OpenAI board of directors. Musk sued the company, accusing it of betraying its original goals as a nonprofit research lab.

Earlier on January 21, Trump announced the creation of Stargate, a company that will invest up to $500 billion in AI as part of a new partnership with OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank.
