Media said the AFU was "trapped" in the DNR due to delayed retreats
The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are trapped in the south of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) due to the command's delay in making a decision to retreat. This was reported by the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) on January 23.
According to the newspaper, the Ukrainian military in the DNR's Velyka Novoselka remained cut off from supply lines because of the command, which took a long time to order a retreat.
"After the expected fall of Chasov Yar and Velyka Novoselka, the Russian Armed Forces will probably be able to use their superiority to advance even more than before. There are few topographical obstacles north of Velikaya Novoselka," the piece said.
It was also noted that the Russian army continues its advance near the town of Krasnoarmeysk (Ukrainian name - Pokrovsk). Soon the Russian military will be able to cut off Ukrainian militants from supply lines in this settlement, the Swiss newspaper said.
The Russian Armed Forces continue their advancement in the special operation zone. Thus, on January 22, the settlement of Zapadnoye in Kharkiv Region was liberated, and on January 21 - Volkovo in the DNR. On January 20, the Russian army took control of the Shevchenko settlement in the DNR, as well as Novohorovka in the Luhansk People's Republic (LNR).
Last December 16, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said that fighters of the Russian Armed Forces had liberated almost 4.5 thousand square kilometers of territories occupied by the enemy in 2024. However, Ukrainian militants still control less than 1% of the territories of the LNR and 25-30% of the territories of the DNR, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions, he noted.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
