Rutte at Davos confused the direction of the offensive in Ukraine
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos confused the direction of the offensive in Ukraine. The video of the speech was published on January 23 on the YouTube channel NATO News.
"The front line is moving in the wrong direction - to the east," Rutte said.
In fact, the front is shifting to the west. Nevertheless, the alliance secretary general did not notice his mistake and continued his speech, calling to change the trajectory of the conflict.
According to Rutte, NATO needs to strengthen its support for Ukraine. In addition, this conflict is of "geopolitical" importance, so all Western countries should participate in supporting the Ukrainian side, the NATO secretary general said.
Earlier, on January 13, Rutte also called on the alliance countries to step up support for Ukraine to change the trajectory of the conflict. According to him, military supplies to Kiev should be accelerated to ensure that the country has a strong negotiating position.
At the time, it was also reported that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius handed over the first of 54 RCH 155 wheeled howitzers to Ukraine. A day earlier, he announced the allocation of a new military aid package to Kiev.
Before that, on 10 January, Polish Defence Minister Vladyslav Kosyniak-Kamysh said that the situation in Ukraine had upset his colleagues from NATO countries and called it very difficult for the Ukrainian army. In its turn, Reuters wrote on January 9 that the transfer of US weapons did not change the situation on the battlefield in Kiev's favor.
Western countries increased their military and financial support for Ukraine after Russia launched a special operation to defend Donbas. The decision to carry it out was announced on February 24, 2022 amid the aggravation of the situation in the region.
