- Media has learned of US plans to send thousands of military personnel to protect the border with Mexico
Thousands of US troops will be sent to the southern border with Mexico in the next two days, according to the order of US President Donald Trump to strengthen the presence of the military contingent in the area. This was reported by CNN on January 22, citing sources.
To date, about 2.2 thousand military personnel are already on the border as part of Task Force North in El Paso, Texas. They are engaged in monitoring, logistical support and maintenance of transportation, as well as work with statistical data, specified CNN.
The reinforcements will perform similar tasks, including threat analysis, according to the channel. As indicated, federal resources along the southern U.S. border have been in short supply for years due to the influx of migrants.
Prior to this, on January 21, the curator of border security in the Trump administration Thomas Homan said that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began to detain illegal migrants for further deportation. He noted, however, that ICE's actions cannot be called "raids" as they are part of targeted law enforcement operations.
On the same day, a coalition of at least 18 US states filed a lawsuit against the president's decision to limit the granting of US citizenship by birthright. Another group of states, which included Arizona and Washington, filed another separate lawsuit against Trump's signature decision.
