Colombia seized one of the largest cocaine shipments in the country's history
A shipment of cocaine, which contained more than 8 tons of the drug, was seized in Colombia, one of the largest attempts to smuggle it in the country's history. This was announced on January 22 by the President of the Latin American republic, Gustavo Petro.
"The National Police seized 8.2 tons of cocaine in the port of Buenaventura. This is one of the largest cocaine seizures in Colombia's history. This month, the national police seized 24 tons," the head of state said in a post on his X (former Twitter) page.
The footage published by the president shows that bags of cocaine were hidden in bags of earth. Law enforcers examined the place where the drugs were hidden with a service dog.
The newspaper El Tiempo cites statistics according to which in 2024 in Colombia seized 848.5 tons of cocaine, which is 14% more than in 2023 - then from drug traffickers confiscated 741.2 tons.
Earlier, on December 31, 2024, Petro reported that Colombia seized more than 5 tons of cocaine that had been hidden in leeks in banana boxes on a Panamanian ship that was on the high seas near Acapulco.
