Sovfed called Trump's call for Russia to make a "deal" on Ukraine strange
The deputy chairman of the Federation Council's Committee on International Affairs, Andrey Klimov, has called US President Donald Trump's call on Russia to make a "deal" on the conflict in Ukraine strange. He made the corresponding statement in a conversation with Izvestiya on January 22.
Earlier in the day, in his Truth Social social network, the American leader wrote that if the US and Russia do not make a "deal" soon, he will have to impose taxes, tariffs and sanctions on all Russian exports.
Klimov noted that the oddity of Trump's statement is that it was the United States that started the Ukrainian conflict. According to him, the Russian Federation "is being offered to punish us for something we are not guilty of."
Commenting on the possibility of new sanctions, the politician recalled that in the first term of the presidency, Trump signed a law that calls to "contain Russia as an "adversary of the United States."
"The most curious thing in this whole story for me is the following: it is proposed to make some kind of deal, the content of which, frankly speaking, I think nobody knows anything about. It seems to me that Trump himself does not really know what this deal should contain," the deputy chairman said.
Klimov urged "not to wait for favor" from foreign representatives and continue to carry out the tasks of the special military operation (SMO).
Earlier in the day, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Trump instructed his special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg to resolve the Ukrainian conflict in 100 days.
Commenting on the relevant media report, Klimov said that the US should learn to behave in a civilized manner in the international arena, including in relations with Russia. According to him, 100 days comes from the American tradition, when during this time American presidents show miracles to the people.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the aggravated situation in the region.
