Program updates for various devices often contain important vulnerability fixes, so you should enable automatic installation of new versions. This was reported on January 22 in the Department for organizing the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"In most cases it (new version. - Ed.) fixes vulnerabilities that can be exploited by attackers. Even a slight delay in updating can be harmful," the agency said in its Telegram channel.

The CBP of the Ministry of Internal Affairs recalled the WannaCry virus, which exploited a vulnerability in the Windows operating system in 2017. The malware spread to tens of thousands of computers around the world, in Russia the virus harmed hospitals, banks and some government agencies. At the same time, the vulnerability was already fixed in the update that Windows released a few months before the attack, but many people did not install the new version in time.

In addition, a delay in downloading updates hurt Android users in 2015. The security issue allowed smartphones to be hacked via MMS messages, and data of users who did not install the update was stolen.

The agency advised to enable automatic updates, and download new versions to all devices: computer, phone, router and smart appliances that have access to the Network. In addition, it is necessary to check and old devices that have not been used for a long time. It is also important to keep track of where updates are installed from - you can only download them from official resources.

Earlier in the day, Sarkis Shmavonyan, manager for work with educational organizations of Cyberprotect, told Izvestia that unexpected SMS messages with a one-time code from Gosuslugi may be a sign of account hacking. After the introduction of mandatory two-factor authentication on the service , cell phone numbers became the main vulnerability. In particular, fraudsters can use old phone numbers that their owners do not use, but they are still linked to the account.
