Ukraine arrests AFU general Gorbenko accused of defense failure

The Kiev Pecherskyy district court has arrested for two months the former commander of the 125th territorial defense brigade in Lviv Region, Lieutenant-General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) Artur Horbenko, who is accused of failing to defend the Kharkiv region in May 2024. This was reported on January 22 by the publication "Strana.ua".

In addition, in addition to the term of detention, he was assigned a bail in the amount of 25 million hryvnias (more than 59 million rubles).

Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Butusov reported on 20 January that the State Investigation Bureau (SIB) had detained Gorbenko together with Brigadier-General Yuriy Halushkin and the commander of the 155th mechanized brigade Anna Kievska, Colonel Dmytro Ryumshyn. Later, the GBR confirmed the information.

Earlier, on January 17, it was reported that the 155th mechanized brigade "Anna Kievskaya" of the AFU collapsed after deployment. During the training, 50 people deserted from the unit. For the entire period of existence of "Anna Kievskaya" AWOL 1.7 thousand servicemen left the unit.

Before that, on January 15, military observer David Axe reported that after the collapse of the 155th mechanized brigade, the AFU will not form new ones. According to him, the Ukrainian army will focus on strengthening the existing units.

On January 8, the Ukrainian GBR detained a company commander of the 155th mechanized brigade of the AFU on suspicion of desertion and inciting subordinates to do so. The senior lieutenant was taken into custody but may be released on bail.
