Denmark's EP MP profanely rejected Trump's idea to buy Greenland
MEP (EP) from Denmark Anders Vistisen, using profanity, called on US President Donald Trump to stop talking about the idea of buying Greenland from the kingdom, because, according to him, the island is not for sale. He said this at a meeting of the EP, which took place on January 22.
"Dear President Trump, listen very carefully. Greenland has been part of the Danish Kingdom for 800 years. It is not for sale. Let me say it in words that you understand: Mr. Trump, <get off>!" - said Vistisen, whose speech was broadcast by NBC News.
The MP added that Greenland is a fully integrated part of Denmark. One of the moderators admonished Vistisen for using foul language, indicating that he would face consequences for his act.
"Regardless of what we think of Mr. Trump, it is not allowed to use such words," the moderator said.
Earlier on January 21, Aya Chemnitz, a member of Greenland's People's Community party and a member of the kingdom's parliament, said Denmark would not be able to defend the island even by moving all its defense capabilities there. The head of the Greenlandic government, Muthe Egede, pointed out on the same day that the people of the island should determine their own future. The Prime Minister noted that Greenlanders do not want to be Americans and at the same time are not Danes, recalls "Gazeta.Ru".
Chairman of Greenland's largest opposition party "Naleraka", member of the island's Parliament Pele Broberg on January 20 offered Trump to make a "win-win" deal on the independence of the island. The island would then be able to reclaim its land and enter into a defense agreement with the United States.
On Dec. 22, 2024, Trump said it was an absolute necessity for the U.S. to own and control Greenland. He had previously expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019 but was turned down. In the coming year, Trump was also indicated to Trump that the island is not for sale and will not be sold, but Denmark can cooperate more with the US.
