Production of Korean KGM cars may be established in Russia


The company "Rex Motors", the distributor of cars of the South Korean brand KGM (former SsangYong), is negotiating the beginning of assembly of cars of the brand in Russia. This was reported on January 22 by the portal "Drom" with reference to its sources.
According to them, negotiations are in the active phase, and the beginning of assembly of KGM cars in Russia may take place in 2025.
KGM brand will be represented in Russia by four models, which have already been announced earlier - crossovers Tivoli, Korando and Torres, as well as a frame SUV Rexton. The first batch of imported cars has already arrived by ferry to St. Petersburg from South Korea.
According to the publication, the first batch includes about 800 cars. At the same time, none of the models has not yet received Vehicle Type Approval (VTA). At the same time, Rex Motors has not yet signed any dealer contracts, the company has only "agreements of intent" signed with about 30 dealers, the note says.
Pricing for the models has yet to be announced, with sales scheduled to start in early 2025. It is expected that the KGM Tivoli crossover in the base configuration (the most budget model in the brand's lineup) will cost more than 2.5 million rubles. All cars are produced in South Korea, they are promised five-year support in the Russian market. SsangYong cars were sold in Russia since the mid-1990s, in 2018 the brand officially left the market. The company's return to the Russian Federation was announced in early November 2024.
Earlier in the day it was reported that sales of a new crossover Bestune T90 from the Chinese concern FAW started in Russia. The car is available in three configurations and with two powertrains to choose from.
