- The Council of Federation was not surprised by Trump's words about the possibility of imposing new sanctions against Russia

US President Donald Trump's words about the possibility of new Washington sanctions against Moscow are not news. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Andrei Klimov on Wednesday, January 22.
Earlier, Trump allowed the introduction of new sanctions against Russia if the country's authorities do not go to negotiations on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, reports 360.ru.
"Trump signed a law on August 2, 2017, on the basis of which all subsequent sanctions since 2017 on Russia and collapsed. In this law, signed by Mr. Trump in 2017, <...> our country is officially named an enemy of the United States of America. The point of the law is to deter America's adversaries through sanctions. For me, there is no news in this statement," Klimov emphasized in a conversation with Lenta.Ru.
On January 21, Trump allowed the preservation of the anti-Russian sanctions regime until the very end of the conflict in Ukraine.
On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the preparation of a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump is not yet underway, writes Life.Ru.
On the eve of the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the end of the conflict in Ukraine a priority for Trump. According to him, "part of the preparatory work" has begun. He also specified that both sides of the conflict should be ready to compromise.
Western countries have tightened sanctions pressure on Russia in connection with the special operation to protect Donbass. The decision to launch it was announced on February 24, 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
