The Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) has sentenced Georgian mercenary Gela Kakhabrishvili in absentia to 14 years in prison. This was reported by the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation on January 22.

It is noted that the Supreme Court considered sufficient evidence collected by the main investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation to pass sentence.

"He was found guilty of committing a crime under part 3 of article 359 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Participation of a mercenary in an armed conflict")", - stated in the Telegram-channel of the Department.

It is established that in February 2022 Kakhabrishvili voluntarily as a mercenary joined one of the units, agreeing to participate in hostilities against law enforcers of the DNR and the Lugansk People's Republic (LNR). After that, the mercenary underwent military and strategic training, as well as received personal firearms, ammunition, uniforms and special equipment.

Before that, on January 20, Latvian professor Ulmanis Juris Alberts was sentenced in absentia to 14 years in prison and put on the international wanted list for participation in the conflict on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). As specified in the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the defendant was found guilty of committing a crime under Article 359 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Participation of a mercenary in an armed conflict").

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which the Russian Federation announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
