- Ovechkin called Trump's words about his success with the Washington Capitals gratifying
Russian forward and captain of the Washington Capitals hockey club (HC) Alexander Ovechkin indicated that he was pleased with the words of US President Donald Trump, who noted his successes on the hockey court.
"Yes, I've heard Donald Trump's remarks about the Washington Capitals and about me. Of course, it's nice when the team's successes are followed, when they know you, your last name, know where you're from," his words were quoted in the athlete's team's Telegram channel on January 22.
The politician mentioned Ovechkin on the eve of his inauguration, January 19, when he spoke at a rally held at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC. He said the Russian is "very good and doing a great job."
Speaking to the club's press staff, Ovechkin also clarified that he did not receive an invitation to the inauguration of the American leader.
"I was not invited to the inauguration, I am now with the team at the away series [of the National Hockey League (NHL) championship], in Edmonton, preparing for the match," the hockey player said.
Trump on January 19 also thanked the owners of Capital One Arena and noted that the Russian hockey player's HC is in a great position. As Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out on January 20, the Russian captain of the Washington Capitals team is perceived in the United States as a great hockey player of American hockey. However, this has nothing to do with domestic audiences.
Before that, on January 17, Ovechkin reduced the gap from the record of Canadian Uyen Gretzky to 20 goals, scoring the puck in overtime of the regular season NHL match against the Ottawa Senators. The hockey player's puck became the only one for the entire game and helped Washington win.
