Chinese embassy says there is no winner in trade war with US
Washington should respect the rules and create an environment for bilateral cooperation with China, as there will be no winners in the tariff war between the countries. Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., said on January 22.
"Regarding the issue of the US imposing additional tariffs on China: China believes that the essence of Sino-US economic and trade cooperation is mutual benefit and win-win. "There are no winners in trade wars and tariff wars," he told RIA Novosti.
At the same time, Pengyu pointed to China's strict fight against drugs, as well as the support of the United States to solve problems related to fentanyl. The diplomatic spokesman recalled that the White House has previously recognized such cooperation, and China's measures have helped in the fight against fentanyl in the US.
He also noted that China, as a country with one of the most strict and thorough approaches to drug control in the world, is willing to continue cooperation with the United States on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and respect.
"The US should cherish China's goodwill and maintain the hard-won good situation in drug control cooperation," Pengyu concluded.
Earlier on Nov. 26, 2024, US President Donald Trump said he would impose additional 10 percent duties on goods from China and 25 percent duties on all products from Mexico and Canada. He said China had failed to fulfill a promise to impose the death penalty on fentanyl traffickers, causing "drugs to flood" into the US - mostly through Mexico - on an unprecedented scale.
Prior to that, on November 20, The Washington Post (WP) reported that the trade duties Trump is about to impose could seriously damage European Union (EU) countries. According to economists, "protectionist measures of Trump" may entail further recession in Europe and complicate relations between allies.
On November 6, it became known that the EU fears that after the election of Trump may start a new trade war between the countries of the association and Washington. It was specified that in 2018, being the President of the United States, Trump for reasons of national security imposed a duty on steel at 7% and a tariff on imports of aluminum with a rate of 10%.
