Members of the European Parliament (EP) plan to urge the EU not to recognize the results of the presidential election in Belarus. The corresponding document was published on January 21 on the EP website.

According to the document, the EP called on the EU countries and the international community to reject the campaign and elections in Belarus as fictitious, as the elections in Belarus allegedly "do not meet the minimum international standards for democratic elections."

"The European Parliament condemns the lack of freedom, fairness and transparency in the run-up to the so-called presidential election in Belarus and calls on the EU, its member states and the international community to categorically reject the upcoming elections and the election campaign as sham," the document reads.

At the same time, the EP urged the countries not to recognize the legitimacy of Alexander Lukashenko as president after the elections, as well as to strengthen sanctions against Belarus.

The plenary session will vote for the resolution on January 22.

Earlier, January 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin wished success in the presidential elections to his Belarusian counterpart.

Before that, January 7, Lukashenko said that he doesn't hold on to power and considers it his advantage. He also emphasized that he would do everything to quietly hand it over to the new generation.

Presidential elections in Belarus are scheduled for January 26, 2025. Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeenko called the upcoming elections an important and significant social and political event.

The candidates for the presidential election are the current leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus Oleg Gaidukevich, MP Anna Kanopatskaya, leader of the Belarusian Communists Sergei Syrankov and leader of the Party of Labor and Justice Alexander Khizhnyak.
