- Moscow has notified Tokyo of the termination of memorandums on the work of Japanese centers in the Russian Federation
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has notified the Japanese side of the termination of intergovernmental memorandums on the activities of Japanese centers for technical assistance to the reforms carried out in Russia. This was reported in the press service of the department on January 21.
"The Russian Foreign Ministry notified the Japanese side on January 21 about the termination of the application of the memorandum <...> on the establishment and activities on the territory of the Russian Federation of Japanese centers for technical assistance to the reforms carried out in the Russian Federation," - said in the message of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The ministry pointed out that the agreements were terminated due to the fact that Japan imposes sanctions against Russia from 2022 and other unfriendly steps that "run counter to the spirit and letter of the memorandums". The message also pointed out that the agreements were once based on cooperation and partnership between the countries.
On the eve of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia would consider the possibility of restoring relations with Japan if the initiatives of the Japanese side will be supported by real steps. The ministry stressed that Moscow is guided by the fact that in Japan today there are still politicians who realize the harm of the anti-Russian course of the official authorities, the ministry stressed.
Before that, on November 30, 2024, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the resumption of dialogue between Russia and Japan on the peace treaty is possible only after Tokyo's refusal to abandon its hostile course aimed at harming our country and its citizens.
Earlier, on November 29, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said during his keynote speech before Parliament that the country will continue to work on solving the territorial problem and concluding a peace treaty with Russia.
On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Japan expresses solidarity with Western countries unfriendly to Russia and joins the anti-Russian sanctions, thus hindering the dialog on a peace treaty with Russia.
