- Trudeau warned Trump that the U.S. would have to buy resources from Russian Federation
TheUnited States will have to buy resources from Russia if United States President Donald Trump imposes tariffs of 25% on Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters on January 21.
"Trump has said he wants to usher in a 'golden age' for the United States that will require more steel and aluminum, more critical minerals, more reliable and affordable energy, more of everything to keep the U.S. economy moving forward at full speed. Canada has all of those resources," Trudeau said.
He said the alternative would be for the U.S. to buy resources from Russia, China or Venezuela, but Canada is willing to work with the United States to create a thriving economy in North America.
On January 16, Bloomberg reported that Canada is ready to impose duties on $105 billion worth of U.S.-made products when Trump imposes tariffs on Canadian goods.
Earlier, on January 14, it was reported that Canadian Ambassador to Washington Kristen Hillman said that the country was ready to buy more of various goods from the United States in order to mitigate the threat of Trump's duties. The ambassador noted that Canada is not interested in a trade conflict with the United States.
Earlier, on December 3, Trump said during a meeting with Trudeau that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States if Ottawa fails to address illegal migration and drug smuggling. He noted that he would impose import duties of 25% on all Canadian goods.
