The US withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) will not affect the situation in Russia. This opinion was expressed by Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection Alexei Kurinniy on Tuesday, January 21.

At the same time, the deputy called dangerous consequences after the signing of the decree.

"In terms of funding will be something serious. Because the United States is about a third of the WHO budget revenues. So a number of programs, including those of a worldwide nature, to provide medical assistance to underdeveloped countries will have to be reduced," the MP said in conversation with Lenta.Ru.

The MP explained that Russia is not among the recipients of significant assistance from the WHO, so Trump's decision will have no impact on Russian health care. He added that for Moscow, the World Health Organization is mainly an information source.

"From the point of view of protecting exclusively US interests, this is an isolationist step, in my opinion, not very promising. But from the point of view of the policy that Trump is pursuing today, in terms of America being the only great power, it may be justified," Kurinny concluded.

Earlier in the day, Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the WHO, 360.ru reported. He noted that the United States during his presidential term gave contributions to the organization in the amount of $500 million a year, while China - $39 million, specifies "Moscow 24". The Republican leader noted that the population of China exceeds the number of people living in America, but despite this, China transfers many times less money to the WHO.

In 2020, during his previous presidential term, Trump accused WHO of ineffective fight against the coronavirus and influence from China on the activities of the organization. On those grounds, he first announced the suspension of US funding for the WHO and then the country's withdrawal. A few months later, Joe Biden reversed this decision on the day of his inauguration.
