The flag was raised over the US embassy in Moscow by order of US President Donald Trump on January 21.

Earlier, the country's symbol was lowered by order of former President Joe Biden in memory of former US President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 30, 2024. American flags were also lowered over the White House and other government buildings in various countries within 30 days.

Carter died at the age of 100 on December 30, 2024. He entered home hospice care in February 2023 in Plains, Georgia, after a series of brief hospitalizations.

Biden declared January 9 a day of mourning due to the death of former President Carter. He also ordered U.S. flags to be lowered for 30 days as a sign of national mourning.

On January 20, Trump signed an executive order that flags over government buildings were never lowered during the presidential inauguration.
