A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan
Earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4, due to which 15 people were slightly injured, recorded in the south of Taiwan. This was reported on January 20 by CNN with reference to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The epicenter was located 12 km north of Yujing at a preliminary depth of 10 km, said the U.S. Geological Survey. Taiwan's Central Meteorological Administration recorded a magnitude of 6.4.
No deaths have been reported from the quake, although rescuers are still assessing the damage.
Before that, on January 16, the probability of a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8-9 in the Nankai fault, located to the southeast of the Japanese island of Honshu, rose to 80%. It is specified that the probability of occurrence is calculated for the next 30 years. Victims of natural phenomenon may become up to 323 thousand local residents.
Earlier, September 2, 2024, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 was recorded off the coast of Taiwan. Thus, the tremors, the epicenter of which was located 8.5 km southeast of Hualian County, were registered at 16:26 (11:26 Moscow time). The origin was at a depth of 23.9 km.
