Incoming US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, January 21, that he would work to end the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible.

"We're going to try to end it as quickly as possible," he told reporters in the Oval Office.

As noted by the Associated Press (AP), Trump also said he would soon speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Most people thought [the conflict] would be over in one week <...> I think it would be very good for [Putin] to end this [conflict]," Trump said.

At the same time, Trump added that he believes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term expires in May 2024) wants an agreement to end the clash.

Earlier, on January 20, Trump did not mention Russia and Ukraine in his inauguration speech. The main topic of the president-elect's speech was the internal problems of the United States and the defense of its borders. Among other things, Trump promised in the speech to return the Panama Canal to the United States and to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the American Gulf. At the same time, in his speech at the Capitol, Trump said that the strength of the United States will allow to "end all wars" and ensure unity in the world.

Before that, Trump took the oath of office in the rotunda of the Capitol, becoming the 47th President of the United States, reports "Gazeta.Ru". Along with him, Vice President Jay Dee Vance was sworn in. This is the second presidential term of Trump, the first time he was the American leader in 2017-2021. In his inaugural speech, the new US President announced the beginning of the "golden age of America".

The election of the 47th president of the United States was held on November 5. In the national vote, Trump received 51% of the vote, while former US Vice President Kamala Harris received 47.4%. Speaking to supporters, the Republican said that his goal as head of state considers the end of military conflicts in the world.
