- The U.S. has named an alternative to TikTok that is gaining popularity among Americans
Americans are actively using the Chinese app Xiaohongshu, whose popularity has increased dramatically amid failures in the work of the video platform TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. This was reported by The New Yourk Times on January 20.
As the publication notes, Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote, took the first place in the ranking of the most downloaded applications in the U.S. App Store. The developers of the platform also added a function of translation of content.
It is noted that Chinese users help Americans navigate censorship, while US users pique the interest of Chinese audiences with clips of their daily lives.
On January 19, NBC News reported that the social network TikTok became inaccessible for US residents. It was specified that the social network disappeared from the application stores App Store and Google Play.
Later in the day, US President-elect Donald Trump published in Truth Social an appeal to keep the application available and said he would issue an executive order to freeze the implementation of the law banning TikTok on the day of his inauguration. The politician specified that the decree could include the sale of 50% of the company to a new owner. At the time, the video platform also restored service to USA users and expressed gratitude to Trump for expressing his desire to make TikTok available.
Current US President Joe Biden signed a law banning the social network on April 24, 2024. Senators in Congress then approved the measure by an overwhelming majority because they believed the Chinese government could secretly spy on US citizens through the app.
