On January 25, the Orthodox Church remembers the holy martyr Tatiana of Rome, who lived at the turn of the II-III centuries in Rome. The holiday is popularly known as Tatiana's Day. It is celebrated not only by believers, but also by all students of the country. In 2025, the celebration falls on Saturday. About what customs and omens are associated with this date, tell "Izvestia".

History of Tatiana's Day, celebrated on January 25

The holy martyr was born into a noble family and brought up in the Christian faith. In her youth she refused marriage, fully devoting herself to the service of God. Tatiana became a deaconess, receiving the right to interpret the Gospel. She also prepared people for baptism and cared for the sick.

When persecution of Christians began in Rome, the girl refused to renounce her faith, for which she was tortured and executed. Later the Church canonized the martyr as a saint. She is honored by both Orthodox and Catholics. In folk tradition, the celebration is called Tatiana's Day.

Initially it was a folk-Christian holiday. Later it began to be associated with students in Russia: it was on this day in 1755 that the first university, now Lomonosov Moscow State University, was opened in our country. Since then, St. Tatiana has been considered the patroness of students, and the holiday itself is celebrated as Student Day, since 2005 - as the Day of Russian Students.

Folk omens for Tatiana's Day on January 25

Since ancient times, Tatiana's Day is associated with many omens and superstitions. People believed that on her holiday the saint will fulfill any wish. Therefore, they addressed her with various requests.

Women were sure to bake a loaf, which every member of the family had to try. This promised health and prosperity for the whole year. Bread crumbs were not thrown away, but given to birds or cattle. According to the beliefs, great misfortune awaited the one who did otherwise.

To make the house always happy and calm, they went to the river to beat out doormats. Then clean paths were laid at the entrance, blocking the way of all bad things.

Unmarried girls wore their best outfits and jewelry, as the day was considered favorable for dating, when it was possible to arrange their fate.

On Tatiana's Day there were also many omens for the weather. Thus, in the olden days it was believed that if Tatiana was snowing, the summer would be rainy, a snowstorm heralded a drought and a poor harvest. Sunny weather spoke of early warming, and large snowdrifts - a rich harvest of bread.

Student omens for Tatiana's Day - 2025

Since Tatiana of Rome is considered the patroness of students, the saint is often appealed to for help in studies and before important events. This is especially true during the winter session, which ends just at the end of January.

Many student superstitions and omens are associated with the holiday. For example, on the day before the exam you can not cut your hair, wash your head and wash yourself, so as not to wash away knowledge. At midnight it is necessary to climb out the window and, waving an open credit card, call for freebies, hoping that the exam will be the only ticket, the topic of which the student knows the student knows from and to.

It is also customary to put open textbooks and notes under the pillow. It is believed that knowledge during sleep will settle in the student's head. On the day of the exam they put a nickel in their pocket, which guarantees an "A". And before pulling out the ticket, they say the incantation: "Pull the hand that the head knows".

Also at the exams should wear clothes, which previously managed to get a good score. In addition, friends and relatives should scold the examinee in order for the exam to be successful. The more they scold him, the better the result is expected.
