The phone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is a good start to China-United States relations for the coming period. This was reported by the Chinese newspaper Global Times on January 20.

The Chinese president said during the conversation that China and the United States attach great importance to cooperation, and hoped that there will be a favorable start of interaction between the countries during Trump's new term as president.

"The US and China are the most important countries in the world today and should maintain long-term friendship and work together to protect global peace," the US leader-elect said in turn.

According to Xi Jinping, at the moment the whole world is watching the process of building relations between the United States and China as two leading world powers. He emphasized that this first conversation is of great significance.

The phone call between Trump and Xi Jinping was reported earlier, on January 17. At the same time it became known that the Chinese leader would skip the inauguration of the US President-elect on January 20. On the same day, Trump confirmed the phone conversation with Xi Jinping and told what topics they discussed. He emphasized that the conversation was equally beneficial for both sides.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on Jan. 4 that Sino-US relations under Trump's presidency could improve if he fulfills his "goodwill intentions."

Meanwhile, Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Russian Government, shared with Izvestia on December 13, 2024, that Washington and Beijing may tighten mutual sanctions after Trump's inauguration. According to him, it is more likely that the countries' relations will worsen.
