The European Union (EU) should not count on the possibility of a victory march of soldiers of Western countries through Red Square in Moscow. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said this on January 20 at a conference on the results of his country's presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2024.

"But do we really think that our soldiers will march under the flag of the European Union on Red Square in Moscow? If we don't think so, we should keep diplomatic channels open for negotiations," Orban said.

Orban also emphasized that if war breaks out in Europe, all sides will suffer losses. He added that the crisis in Ukraine should be resolved as soon as possible and pointed out that Hungary's peacekeeping mission was initiated for this very purpose.

Earlier, on December 23, 2024, Orban said that the situation in Ukraine had changed and everyone started talking about peace, despite the fact that the Hungarian peacekeeping mission had failed. He specified that it could not be considered a success because the original goals had not been met. At the same time, according to Orban, many countries have started talking about the beginning of a "new world."

In October, Orban said that Ukraine could not win in the confrontation with Russia on the battlefield and that communication and ceasefire were necessary to save lives.

The special operation to protect Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022, is still ongoing. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
