Dmitry Kharatyan was born on January 21, 1960 in the city of Almalyk, Tashkent region of the Uzbek SSR. The actor's father Vadim Kharatyan was a teacher at a technical university. Mother, Svetlana Tizenko, worked as a civil engineer. On his father's side, Kharatyan is a quarter Armenian, this nationality at his request was indicated in his first passport.
Parents divorced when Dmitry was six years old. Until then, the family managed to live in Lipetsk, and then moved to Krasnogorsk, Moscow region. Here the future screen star graduated from school number 9, about which to this day keeps warm memories.

Dmitry Kharatyan has been married twice. The first time he married in his student years to a classmate Marina Burimova. In marriage, the couple had a daughter Alexandra. She received an education in finance, and later trained as a producer. Now together with her husband lives in Sweden. The second wife of the actor was actress Marina Maiko. The couple married in 1997, eight years after meeting. A year later, a son Ivan was born.
