TikTok said it has restored service to US users
Video platform TikTok has restored service to US users after President-elect Donald Trump's statements about postponing the social network's ban in the United States. The company announced this on January 19 on its X (former Twitter) page.
"TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing needed clarity and assurances to our service providers that they will not face any penalties while providing TikTok to more than 170 million Americans and allowing more than 7 million small businesses to thrive," the post reads.
Representatives of the platform also expressed gratitude to Trump for expressing his desire to make TikTok available to broadcast his inauguration on January 20.
According to NBC News, during his campaign, Trump, who favored banning the platform during his first term as president, came out in support of TikTok, saying he would keep the app, according to NBC News.
On January 19, NBC News reported that the social network TikTok had become inaccessible to US residents. It was specified that the social network disappeared from the App Store and Google Play app stores.
Later in the day, Trump published in Truth Social a call to keep the application available and said he would issue an executive order to freeze the implementation of the law banning TikTok on the day of his inauguration. The politician specified that the decree could include the sale of 50% of the company to a new owner.
US President Joe Biden signed the law banning the social network on April 24, 2024. Senators in Congress then approved the measure by an overwhelming majority because they believed that the Chinese government could secretly spy on US citizens through the application.
