Sandu named a condition for assistance to Transnistria
Chisinau will ask Western countries to help Transnistria in the situation of energy crisis on condition of withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from there. Moldovan President Maia Sandu said on January 19.
"Now we are ready [to help] <...> it can happen when the Russian army withdraws from the left bank and when the peacekeeping mission is replaced by a civilian mission under the auspices of the UN or the EU. These are the main conditions through which we can provide substantial assistance,"Sputnik Moldovaquoted her as saying.
Sandu also pointed to the need for international support in resolving the situation in Transnistria, Gazeta.Ru added.
A state of emergency has been in effect in Transnistria since December 9, 2024. In early January, it was reported that 1.5 thousand multi-storey and 72 thousand private homes were left without heat and gas.
On January 17, the head of the unrecognized DMR, Vadim Krasnoselsky, asked Sandu not to interfere with gas supplies from Russia. According to him, the goal pursued by Moldovan officials is to aggravate the existing crisis. For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia was ready to help Transnistria in the fight against the gas crisis. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed dissatisfaction with these assistance measures.
"Gazprom has stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transport system from January 1, 2025 due to Ukraine's refusal to extend the transit agreement.
