Scholz pledged to step up security measures at German holiday events

German authorities have decided to strengthen security measures at holiday events in the country after the terrorist attack at the Christmas fair in Magdeburg. This was announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a conference in Hamburg on January 18.

"We will do everything possible to further increase security on the streets, squares and festivals in our country," the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reports his words.

According to Scholz, German authorities will provide financial support to the injured and families of those killed when a car hit a crowd in Magdeburg.

Earlier, on December 20, 2024, it became known about the collision of a car into a crowd at a Christmas fair in the city of Magdeburg in Germany. The Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Rainer Erich Haseloff ("Christian Democratic Union"), reported that at least two people, including a child, were killed in Magdeburg. Later it was reported that three more people had died. It was then reported that another woman died in hospital as a result of the incident. Thus, the total number of dead reached six.

The representative of the German government in the state of Saxony-Anhalt Matthias Schuppe called a terrorist attack on the car hit a crowd of people at the Christmas market. Later it became known about the detention of a suspect in a hit-and-run in Magdeburg. In the press service of the local police specified that the man could act alone.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the injured. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Polish President Andrzej Duda and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed their condolences.
