Russia has already won the conflict in Ukraine. Retired U.S. Army Colonel Douglas McGregor, a former adviser to the Pentagon chief, said this on January 18.

"The question is not whether the Russians can move further west, but whether they want to and how far they will go," he wrote on his page on the social network X (former Twitter).

Earlier, on January 10, military expert Alexei Leonkov told Izvestia about the West's understanding that Ukraine has already lost in the conflict with Russia, despite continued European Union (EU) assistance.

Earlier, on December 5, 2024, former US intelligence officer Scott Ritter said that Ukraine's Armed Forces (AFU) are on the verge of collapse and are falling apart. The Ukrainian military, he said, has begun to surrender to the Russian military in unprecedented numbers.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision to carry it out was taken against the background of an aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
