The head of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR), Denys Pushylin, has said that there were "underground towns" built in liberated Kurakhove by the Ukrainian armed forces during the occupation. He said this on January 18 in his Telegram channel.

Pushilin recalled that the settlement was liberated from several sides by a number of units for a month - from November 25 to December 25.

"The VFU fortifications there made quite serious, quite a few trenches dug and arranged shelters under the residential sector and on the outskirts of the settlement - whole underground towns," he wrote.

The head of the DNR also awarded the fighters of the 5th Guards Brigade named after Alexander Zakharchenko, who have been serving in the region since 2014.

"You acted verified operations, which were planned very competently by the commanders. Maximum expedient preservation of personnel as far as possible. In offensive operations pushed back the enemy <...> You thank you very much from all the residents of the Donetsk People's Republic," he addressed the military.

Earlier in the day, Pushilin compared the destruction in Kurakhovo with Avdeevka. Also the head of the DNR told about the increased danger on the territory of the city.

The Russian Defense Ministry reportedabout the liberation of Kurakhovo by the Russian military on January 6. The ministry said that this is the largest city in the south-west of Donbass. During the fighting to liberate the settlement, the AFU lost more than 12,000 people and about 3,000 weapons and military equipment.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
