More than 50 people were killed as a result of an explosion of a gasoline tanker in the north of Nigeria. This was reported by Vanguard newspaper on January 18 with reference to the commander of the Federal Road Safety Service (FRSC) in Niger State, Kumar Tsukwama.

According to him, people nearby had started collecting fuel spilled from a fuel tanker when the explosion occurred.

"Those who went to collect the fuel were engulfed in flames just as those who rushed to rescue them," Tsukwam said.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arach, indicated that search and rescue operations were currently ongoing at the scene of the explosion.

"The victims have been taken to the hospital for treatment and efforts are underway to recover the bodies of the deceased," he stressed.

Earlier, in October 2024, it was reported that at least 140 people were killed in Nigeria as a result of a gasoline tanker explosion. The gasoline truck was involved in an accident, which caused a fire.
