- Russian Foreign Ministry calls Kiev and London's agreement on 100-year partnership null and void
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, has said that Moscow considers the partnership agreement between Ukraine and the UK as a PR action of the Kiev regime. This was reported on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry on January 18.
"For us it (the agreement. - Ed.) is negligible. We consider it as another PR action of the agonizing Kiev regime, which is ready to sign a bill of sale of the country or make it a new British colony," the statement said.
Zakharova noted that in the centennial agreement of the two countries there is a provision on "establishing a partnership in the field of maritime security, including for the purpose of strengthening the security of the Baltic, Black and Azov seas." According to her, the British side's intention to gain a foothold in these water areas is behind it.
The Sea of Azov has become an internal sea of Russia and any claims to this area is a gross interference in the internal affairs of the country, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry reminded.
In addition, she said that 100 years is a rather symbolic term, so if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term expired in May 2024) and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer leave their posts, hardly anyone will remember this agreement.
"It is sad that in the year of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazism in World War II, the leadership of the UK, our then ally, swears to centuries of support for the Ukrobander neo-Nazis," Zakharova concluded.
The document in question was signed on January 16 by Zelensky and Starmer , who came to Kiev. Following the talks, Starmer said that the UK will always be ready to play a leading role in supporting Ukraine.
In addition, he announced the transfer of a new air defense system to Ukraine. It was also noted that the UK intends to consider the possibility of placing military bases in Ukraine, which is spelled out in the declaration.
The day before, the first deputy chairman of the Federation Council's Committee on International Affairs, Vladimir Dzhabarov, said that the UK had decided to get a new colony in the person of Ukraine by signing a centennial partnership agreement.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the background of Russia's special operation to protect Donbas, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on 24 February 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
