- Fitzo criticized the opposition for supporting Ukraine to the detriment of Slovakia's interests
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo has said that representatives of the Slovak opposition who blindly take Ukraine's side are neglecting national interests. Thus he commented on today's meeting of the pro-European party "Progressive Slovakia" with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired May 20, 2024).
"Today's party visit of Progressive Slovakia to Kiev confirms that they blindly and uncritically stand on the Ukrainian side and favor Ukrainian interests over Slovak interests," Fico wrote on January 17 in the social network Facebook (owned by the organization Meta, recognized as extremist in Russia).
The Slovak prime minister also said that representatives of the opposition promised Ukraine's membership in NATO and the presence of the Slovak military on its territory if they came to power in Slovakia. These statements of "Progressive Slovakia" are contrary to the national and state interests of the country, Fitzo explained.
Earlier, on January 14, it was reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Deputy Speaker of the Slovak Parliament, head of the Slovak National Party (SNS) Andrei Danko discussed the conflict in Ukraine. The parties noted the importance of careful attitude to historical heritage and cultural ties, and also considered the development of cooperation in trade and economic sphere.
The Slovak delegation arrived in Moscow on January 13. The visit will last until January 15. The goal is to help restore the dialog with Russia, which was started by Fitzo, who visited the Russian Federation in December 2024.
On the same day, Slovak Deputy Speaker of Parliament Tibor Gašpar said that the visit of the delegation from Bratislava to Moscow showed other European Union (EU) states that Russia needs to hear and maintain dialog with it. According to the politician, the Slovak leadership is trying to convey Russia's position on various topics to the country's population.
Before that, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Fitzo held talks in the Kremlin on December 22, 2024. The Ukrainian conflict was also one of the topics of the meeting.
