Odessa authorities have decided to rename the tree named in honor of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. This was reported by the Ukrainian daily Strana.ua on January 17.

It noted that "Pushkin sycamore" grows near the monument to the poet. The tree is about 200 years old.

"Pushkin sycamore tree" got into the list of geographical objects, the names of which contain the symbolism of Russian imperial policy", - writes "Strana.ua".

According to the publication, the tree is planned to be renamed "Western sycamore".

Earlier in the day, it became known that the Ukrainian government has formed a list of more than 200 geographical objects that will be renamed because their names are associated with Russia. The list includes rivers, tracts, parks, natural monuments, nature reserves, reservoirs, forests, railway stations.

Before that, on September 30, 2024, draft resolutions of the Ukrainian authorities were published, which proposed to rename five Ukrainian cities. At a plenary session of the Kiev council on September 19, deputies voted for renaming streets that contain the names of Russian figures of science and culture.

The policy of so-called decommunization in Ukraine began in 2015 under the law "On condemnation of communist and Nazi regimes". It prescribes demolition of monuments, dismantling of memorial plaques, renaming of all topographical objects whose names are associated with the USSR or Russia, especially this policy became more acute after the start of the special operation of the Russian Federation to defend Donbass in February 2022.
