More than 500 dead sea turtles of an endangered species were found along the coast of Chennai in southern India. This was reported by The Times of India on January 17.

It is noted that the animals had bulging eyes and their necks were swollen. Preliminary, most of the animals died as a result of drowning.

Sea turtle conservationist Supraja Dharini cited uncontrolled commercial fishing and the use of nets to catch squid as the cause of the incident. According to her, turtles often get caught in these nets and are pulled under the water, although the animals need to surface every 40-45 minutes.

It is also noted that some turtles probably drowned far from the shoreline and were beached a few days later.

Earlier, on August 11, the newspaper Bild reported that near the coastal town of Viareggio in Tuscany in central Italy found dead giant leatherback turtle, which weighed 300 kg. It was specified that the animal was entangled in underwater equipment.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF, the organization is included by the Russian Ministry of Justice in the list of undesirable) then specified that seven remaining species of sea turtles are endangered. Every year, about 250,000 animals fall into the nets of fishermen by accident.
