The team of US President-elect Donald Trump intends to declare a state of emergency to combat illegal migration. This was reported by Politico on January 17.

"Trump's team is preparing to declare a state of emergency, a move designed to provide additional powers and resources to fulfill the new president's promise to secure the borders and deport millions of illegal migrants," the piece said.

As Politico notes, officials are also drafting an executive order to abolish birthright U.S. citizenship.

The scope of these measures is not yet clear, the publication writes. It is specified that the administration of the President-elect may postpone them because of divided opinions on this issue among Republicans.

Earlier, on December 28, 2024, the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Trump's team may use military bases, army and aircraft to deport illegal migrants from the United States. According to the publication's sources, the president-elect plans to declare a state of emergency on immigration and expel illegals en masse on the first day after the inauguration.

Former United States ambassador to Switzerland Edward McMullen said on Nov. 7 that the Republican was looking for the most competent people to appoint to his administration to fight uncontrolled migration and execute strategies on the economy and foreign policy.

Trump, at the time still a presidential candidate, said in his final speech before the Nov. 5 election that migrants were the reason the U.S. was an occupied country. He promised to "save" every city and town that had been "invaded and conquered."

The US Congress on January 6 certified Trump's victory in the 60th presidential election held on November 5, 2024. The inauguration of the president-elect will take place on January 20.
