A cynologist has spoken out about obesity in dogs
Overweight is bad for a dog's health. This was stated by the president of the Russian Cynological Federation Vladimir Golubev on Friday, January 17.
"It affects the work of the cardiovascular system, the state of the musculoskeletal system, reproductive ability and emotional state of the animal," he warned in a conversation with Radio 1.
According to the specialist, to realize that the dog is overweight, it is important to focus on the breed standard, as well as to evaluate the pet visually. The pet can be felt, in the norm the pet's ribs and spine are easy to find, while the pet looks trim and has no problems with movement and breathing.
With excessive vech, the pet may have shortness of breath even with minor exertion, the gait of the animal may change - it seems to fall over when walking like a duck. The dog's belly may protrude, he may lose interest in games and active walks. Males may show a lack of libido, and females may stop having heat or become irregular.
Golubev noted that the diagnosis of "obesity" can only be made by a veterinarian: he assesses the weight of the dog in relation to the breed standard. If it exceeds 30% or more, the pet is obese.
Overweight significantly reduces the quality of life, and also reduces its duration, emphasized the cynologist. Excess pounds can also cause diabetes, joint, cardiovascular, liver and kidney diseases. The dog can start having GI problems and metabolic disorders, he concluded.
On January 13, Golubev said that having two pets brings double joy, as they meet their master from work and give him double the amount of attention, 360.ru reported.
December 17, 2024 cynologist told "Izvestia" that long walks in cold weather can lead to hypothermia and frostbite of the extremities of your pet. This condition can cause serious health problems.
