Discussions on Taiwan's belonging, which are going on in the West, concern China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, in this regard, the PRC hopes that the US will approach them cautiously. This was stated by Chinese President Xi Jinping in a telephone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump on January 17, according to the press service of the Chinese leader.

Xi Jinping noted that as two major countries with different national conditions, China and the US will inevitably face some differences.

"The key point is to respect each other's core interests and major problems and find appropriate solutions to the problems," the press service stressed in a statement.

It is noted that during the talks they also discussed the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Later, the two leaders agreed to establish a strategic communication channel for regular contacts on major issues.

"Xi Jinping emphasized that China and the US have vast common interests and a wide space for cooperation. They can become partners and friends, achieve mutual success and common prosperity, benefiting both countries and the world," the statement summarized.

The Chinese leader's press office specified that the talks between the two sides took place after the Chinese president called the US president-elect by phone "at his request."

The phone conversation between Trump and Xi Jinping was reported earlier in the day. At the same time, it became known that the PRC leader would miss the inauguration of the US president-elect on January 20.

Later, Trump confirmed that the phone conversation with the President of China took place. He expressed hope that together with Xi Jinping the US will be able to solve many problems and make the world more peaceful and safe. As specified by the President-elect of the United States, during the talks they discussed balanced trade, TikTok and many other topics.

Earlier, on January 15, the candidate for the post of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the People's Republic of China is the "main threat" to the United States. He also touched on the issue of Taiwan. Rubio noted that for the leader of the People's Republic of China the situation with Taiwan is a fundamental and defining issue.

The South China Morning Post reported on January 4 that Sino-U.S. relations under Trump's presidency could improve if he fulfills his "goodwill intentions." Meanwhile, Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Russian government, shared with Izvestia on December 13, 2024, that Washington and Beijing may tighten mutual sanctions after Trump's inauguration. According to him, it is more likely that the countries' relations will worsen.
