Russia and Iran have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of security and defense. This is stated in the agreement on comprehensive strategic cooperation between the countries, signed on January 17 by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian.

To develop military-technical cooperation, the states agreed to hold annual meetings of relevant working bodies. In addition, according to the treaty, if one of the states is subjected to aggression, the other side will not provide assistance to the aggressor.

"Military cooperation <...> covers a wide range of issues, including the exchange of military and expert delegations, visits of warships and vessels to the ports of the contracting parties, training of military personnel, exchange of cadets and teachers," follows from the text of the document published on the Kremlin website.

It is also specified that Russia and Iran are going to coordinate positions and promote common efforts in the fight against terrorism and other threats of the world level.

The Strategic Partnership Treaty is concluded for 20 years with automatic renewal for the next five-year periods.

Putin and Pezeshkian signed theComprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty earlier in the day. It is noted that the agreement reflects taking bilateral relations to a new level. The document, among other things, fixes the legal framework within which ties between Moscow and Tehran will develop in the long term.

Putin said the new agreement will give the partnership between the two countries an additional impetus in all areas. He also pointed to the importance of Pezeshkian's visit to Russia, as his arrival provides an opportunity to discuss all areas of cooperation.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stressed on January 15 that the treaty on comprehensive partnership between Russia and the Islamic Republic does not include the creation of a military alliance between Moscow and Tehran, although there are defense and security clauses in the document.
