American film director David Lynch died at the age of 78. This was announced by the director's family on January 16 in the social network Facebook (part of Meta, an organization recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

"It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and artist David Lynch. <...> Now that he is no longer with us, a big hole has been created in the world," the statement said.

Variety specified that in 2024, Lynch announced he had been diagnosed with lung disease and said he would no longer be able to leave the house to work.

Lynch's career began with short animated and feature films. Then in 1977 he made his debut feature film, The Elastic Head. The most popular works of the American director are the TV series "Twin Peaks" and the films "Highway to Nowhere", "Blue Velvet" and "Mulholland Drive".

Lynch was honored with a special award at the 2007 Independent Spirit Awards and the Golden Lion at the 2006 Venice Film Festival.
