Zelensky and Starmer signed a centennial partnership agreement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his term of office expired on May 20, 2024) and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have signed an agreement on strategic cooperation between the countries. This was reported by Reuters on January 16.
Following the signing of the document, the Ukrainian president called this day historic and added that relations between London and Kiev at the current moment are "closer than ever".
"We have reached a new level, this is more than a strategic relationship. We signed an agreement on a century-long partnership," he said.
Earlier in the day, Starmer said that the UK would give Ukraine a new air defense (air defense) system. He said the defense system will be "designed to meet the needs" of Kiev.
On Thursday, January 16, The Associated Press (AP) reported that the British prime minister had arrived in Kiev.
Before that, on January 13, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged the alliance's countries to step up support for Ukraine. According to him, deliveries should be accelerated to ensure Kiev a strong negotiating position.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the background of Russia's special operation to protect Donbas, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
