The UK will hand over a new air defense system to Ukraine. This was announced by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on January 16.

"Starmer told reporters at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired in May 2024. - Ed.) that the defense system will be 'designed to meet Ukraine's needs,'" according to a Reuters piece.

Starmer said he had had intense discussions with Zelensky on the matter for months.

Earlier in the day, The Associated Press (AP) reported that the British prime minister had arrived in Kiev.

Earlier on January 13, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged the alliance's countries to step up support for Ukraine. According to him, deliveries should be accelerated to ensure that Kiev has a strong negotiating position.

On the same day, it was reported that Germany handed over the first of 54 RCH 155 wheeled howitzers to Ukraine. The day before, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the allocation of a new military aid package to Kiev.

Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the background of Russia's special operation to protect Donbas, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on 24 February 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
