Swiss defense chief announces resignation effective March 31
The head of the Swiss Defense Ministry Viola Amherd announced that she will leave her post on March 31 this year. She announced this on January 15 at a press conference broadcast on YouTube.
"Today, I have informed the President of the National Council and the Federal Council of my resignation from the Federal Council on March 31, 2025," Amherd said.
She added that she is ready to hand over her post to the next candidate after more than 30 years of active political activity.
Earlier, on January 11, the Swiss People's Party (UDC) demanded Viola Amherd to resign because she cannot ensure the country's security. The UDC also accused the minister of promoting Switzerland's rapprochement with NATO, which involves the country in foreign conflicts and violates its neutrality.
