Enhanced suppression: new complex will protect residential neighborhoods and industrial facilities from UAVs
The new Sfera UAV detection and suppression system was successfully tested at mass urban events, Rostec told Izvestia. The novelty has also confirmed its effectiveness in the SSO zone. Protection of public events
Integrated zonal radar defense against drones developed by Chelyabinsk radio plant "Polet" (part of the AIS holding of Rostec State Corporation) was successfully tested at mass urban events. This "Izvestia" was reported in the state corporation "Rostec".
The novelty is able to cover an area of several square kilometers. It is based on the complex of detection and suppression of drones "Sphere".
It has already proved its effectiveness on the line of contact in the combat zone of the North Caucasus Defense Forces. The equipment installed on the vehicle neutralized more than 10 enemy drones, which is confirmed by extracts from the combat log.
- The complex is designed for radio-electronic reconnaissance (RER)," said Alexei Naumenko, Director General of Polet. - The algorithm of action is as follows: we determine the channels of control and video signals from drones, after which the system automatically or manually turns on REB (i.e. detection and suppression of UAV control channels). There is no radar in the system, but it can be synchronized with any product if desired.
According to the developers, the modularity of the "Sphere" allows the defense system to be configured based on specific goals and objectives.
- It means that for each customer we can build its own model of potential "threats". Customization of the product is carried out individually for each object depending on the type of terrain and area of the object, - he noted.
One of the priority areas of work of Chelyabinsk Radio Plant "Polet" is to create a line of UAV countermeasures products to ensure comprehensive protection of any facility - from mobile detectors and suppressors to multi-level defense systems.
In November last year, the Sfera-MB complex was tested at a research institute of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The military department included it in the register of recommended products that effectively counter UAVs.
Suppress and neutralize
We have a large country that needs to be protected, and we lack such systems, so this development is certainly relevant in the current situation. Military expert Yuri Lyamin told Izvestia about it.
- REB systems are the safest for use at mass events," he said. - Thus, if anti-aircraft missile systems are deployed in the areas where they are held, there is a probability that a shell will fall to the ground and there will be destruction. The threat of using drones is already great and will only grow. In particular, even various terrorist attacks with their use are possible. Especially since the simplest UAVs have become available to everyone.
The expert also reminded that the development of REB systems is well handled by the national defense industry - dozens of different complexes created by small teams are now effectively protecting our equipment.
- But state corporations have more opportunities. They have funding, specialists, and equipment that will allow them to quickly launch new developments. Small companies have more difficulties in this respect," emphasized Yuri Lyamin.
Klim Dmitriev, a veteran of electronic warfare troops of the Russian Armed Forces, explained to Izvestia that such products are more effective against FPV drones, which are easier and cheaper to use when attacking civilian objects than airplane-type UAVs.
- Now the means of REB and radio reconnaissance are really necessary. After all, they timely inform our servicemen about the danger and prevent attacks from the enemy," he believes. - But there are certain problems. In particular, if we are talking about the defense of a city or facility, it is important to remember that even if the drone is destroyed, it is not a guarantee of safety - the debris will fall, causing damage.
Airspace control system
Earlier "Izvestia" wrote that a unique Airspace Control System (ACS) has been launched in the Moscow region, which is able to detect not only airplanes or helicopters, but also mini and microdrones at extremely low altitudes and target them with air defense or REB systems.
An airborne radar is a network of radar stations with fixed phased antenna arrays. They can be installed on tripods, on vehicles and on the roofs of high-rise buildings, cell phone towers and even on the balconies of ordinary residential buildings. This was told to Izvestia by the deputy chief engineer of the development company "Central Design Bureau of Apparatus Building" from Tula (part of the holding company "High-Precision Complexes" of the state corporation "Rostec").
The UAS detects "Baba Yaga" type drone, as well as aircraft-type UAVs, such as Ukrainian "Fury" or Mugin, which strike industrial facilities, at a distance of 15-18 km. Cessna-type airplanes can be detected at a distance of 30 km, while the long-range Boeing can be detected at a distance of more than 90 km.
The system simultaneously tracks up to 20 aircraft, including small UAVs, determining their type, flight altitude and distance to them.
