Advisers of US President-elect Donald Trump intend to create a demilitarized zone in Ukraine and rule out the possibility of the country's membership in NATO. This was reported by Reuters on January 15.

It noted that the future US administration plans to resolve the conflict in Ukraine in a few months.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst, as reported by Reuters, called these estimates extremely optimistic.

"Trump's advisers generally support the idea of removing the possibility of Ukraine's NATO membership from the agenda, at least for the foreseeable future, and freezing the current front lines," the agency writes.

It is specified that the administration is also in favor of creating a demilitarized zone in Ukraine. According to the advisers, the buffer territory should be patrolled by European troops.

Earlier, on January 12, the American president-elect's national security adviser Mike Waltz said that Trump considers it impossible to resolve the conflict in Ukraine without a dialog with Russia. He added that this dialog will be established over the next few months. Waltz also specified that Trump considers it impossible to "dislodge" Russia from all former Ukrainian territories.

Before that, on January 9, it was reported that Trump gave an ultimatum to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired in May 2024) on the conflict with Russia. He gave the Ukrainian leader six months to complete it.

A U.S. defense official said a day earlier that Russian President Vladimir Putin has no plans to surrender in the Ukrainian conflict and as such Washington is focused on providing Ukraine with the necessary funds to fight.

The team of the US president-elect said on December 13, 2024, that it was discussing with the current White House administration and Ukrainian officials to end the Ukrainian conflict. At the same time, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg admitted the end of this crisis in the coming months.

In addition, on December 3, Kellogg 's plan for a Ukrainian settlement was published. It proposes to end the political isolation of the Russian Federation and retain the liberated territories for it. Trump's special envoy proposed to postpone Ukraine's accession to NATO for a long time. Nevertheless, Kellogg's plan includes continuing military aid to Kiev and providing it with security guarantees.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Putin announced on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
