Russia will send humanitarian gas supplies to Transnistria amid the energy crisis. This was announced by the president of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR), Vadim Krasnoselsky, at a briefing on 15 January.

"The president noted that gas supply for the needs of Transnistrians and the functioning of the Transnistrian economy will be restored in the format of humanitarian and technical assistance to the republic," the press service of the DMR president quoted him as saying.

Krasnoselsky said that he held talks in Moscow on overcoming the energy crisis in the republic. According to him, the talks were held at the level of the Russian Energy Ministry.

There are no details about gas supplies from Russia to the republic yet, Krasnoselsky said.

Since January 1, 2025, Gazprom has stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system. The state corporation noted that this happened due to Ukraine's refusal to extend the agreements. After that, on January 3, Krasnoselsky said that 1,500 multi-storey and 72,000 private houses in Transnistria were left without heat and gas.

On December 9, 2024, Krasnoselsky signed a decree on the introduction of an economic state of emergency in Transnistria due to the risk of stopping gas transit through Ukraine. On January 10, the emergency regime in the DMR economy was extended for another 30 days - until February 8.

On January 8, the first deputy prime minister and DMR economic development minister, Serhiy Obolonik, said that Transnistria was in a state of not only energy but also humanitarian crisis.

Back in August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term of office expired in May 2024) said that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. At the time, Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukrainian territory.
