- Peskov ruled out a link between the signing of the Iran-Russia pact and Trump's inauguration

The date of signing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Russia and Iran, scheduled for January 17, has nothing to do with the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, which will take place on January 20. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Iran's IRNA news agency on January 15.
"Numerous speculations about the choice of the date for signing the grand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Russia and Iran ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration raise only a smile. Let conspiracy theorists continue to rack their brains," Peskov said.
He pointed out that the US president's inauguration is of interest primarily to the citizens of this country, and the date of the ceremony will not affect the Russian-Iranian cooperation that has been proven over the years. That is why it is inappropriate to look for a connection between Trump's inauguration and the completion of two years of work on the document, which was really painstaking, he specified.
The signing of the agreement between Moscow and Tehran, as Peskov emphasized, will be a historic event.
The Kremlin spokesman pointed out that this treaty will work for the benefit of the peoples of Russia and Iran, and it is not directed against the interests of third parties. Peskov recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that Moscow never befriends other states against anyone.
The partnership treaty will touch upon all kinds of diverse ties between Russia and Iran, such as cooperation in the military-political and trade-economic spheres, science, education, cultural and humanitarian aspects.
Peskov pointed out that Moscow and Tehran may further conclude various practical sectoral agreements. They will be based on the legal foundation that will set a new treaty between the two countries.
Earlier in the day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that the comprehensive partnership treaty between Russia and the Islamic Republic does not include the creation of a military alliance between the two countries, although there are provisions on security and defense.
Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said on January 14 that the agreement is for 20 years. In addition, the diplomat said a day earlier that the agreement contains 47 articles and covers all areas of bilateral cooperation. When preparing the document, the most attention was paid to balance, respect for the territorial integrity of states and the principles of sovereignty.
The Kremlin press service reported on January 13 that President of the Republic Masoud Pezeshkian will arrive in Moscow on January 17 on an official visit, on which day he will meet with Putin. The signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement is scheduled after these talks.
