The Estonian Interior Ministry does not consider it necessary to close the border with Russia. This was announced by the head of the department's Border and Migration Policy Department Janek Mägi on January 15.

He specified that the country's Interior Ministry is based on threat assessment.

"Currently, there is no threat assessment that would require closing the eastern border," he told the Postimees newspaper.

Earlier, on January 14, the Estonian Isamaa party proposed a bill that suggests closing the country's borders with Russia because of the alleged organization of hybrid attacks. The security services and the country's government have the authority to make the final decision to close the borders.

Before that, on December 29, 2024, the head of the Estonian Interior Ministry, Lauri Läänemets , expressed the opinion that there was no need to close the borders with Russia, as it would not solve the security problem. According to him, there is no need to rush into a decision to quickly close the borders in Narva and southern Estonia, as it could have an impact on local residents.
